Antioxidants: Vitamins, amino acids and other natural substances that fight free radicals to prevent oxidation. In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation produce free radicals, which are aggressive, unstable, oxygen-containing molecules that have lost an electron and need to steal one from another molecule to regain stability. This creates a chain reaction damaging each cell involved. Free radicals damage cell membranes and normal cellular metabolism. This cell damage leads to premature aging, increased skin sensitivity, irritation, age spots and dryness. Applied topically, antioxidants neutralize free radicals before they are able to attach themselves to the cell membrane and damage the cell.
